Buzzbait/Top Water Rod Help

Featured Replies

Looking for a rod to pair with a Shimano Chronarch MGL 8.1 to use mainly throwing buzz baits and other top water like spooks/whopper ploppers.

Still fairly new and not sure which direction to go so definitely up for some suggestions around the $150-200 mark.

The 2 I've been looking at are:

    - Dobyns Sierra 704C

    - Falcon Expert 6'10 H Head Turner

734C would probably be the best choice for Dobyns rods, it is probably one of the most popular rod model.

I have used one Falcon Expert rod they are also nice rods also. I'll tell you both companies have great warranties/service.

Many sellers are having good sales so check those out too.

I typically prefer 7'0, as the last 7'3 rod I had (Silverado) felt like it was 10'. May be a weird question but how does the Dobyns feel/look.

Is there a noticeable difference in performance between the 734 and 704? Doing some reading seems like people always go for the 734

7 foot ALX IKOS Buzz rod is perfect. $150 and if you want to add a cork handle they will do this (they are semi-custom) might get you closer to $200. The rod is made for throwing buzzbaits. Great for flukes, T-rig Senkos, etc. Its rated up to 3/4 oz and I throw a lot of Whopper Popper 75, 90's and the Choppo 105.

I've never used a 704, but I've mainly used 703 & 734. Dobyns rods feel real nice in hand, very nicely balanced rod/reel. I think most people consider the 734 rod actions that you can use for so many different baits.

*734C balances well in Dobyns lines - can always work top water with rod up or to the side .

Agreed on the dobyns 734c. Fury line is affordable, but you can probably find a used champion in excellent condition in your price range as well.
