Blade Bait Rod Suggestions

Featured Replies

Wanting to try out some blade baits next time out. Planning on picking up a couple 3/8 oz at the local Academy to try until I see if it works or not. Will be fishing from a kayak in a small man made lake with grassy bottom. Some grass is 2-3’ high but most is 2’ or less. Banks drop pretty steeply to 25’ max depth or so. I’ve watched a few videos and rod selection varies from M/F to MH/MF to MH/F so I thought I’d see what y’all think. I fish mostly Dobyns and was thinking either a 705CB or 733C. Also have a Bass X M/F so I have options. Also, have reels with braid, fluoro, and YZH. What do you suggest? Thanks

I vote for M/F ~

But I do not vote for fishing a blade bait through soft cover (grass).

You'll spend your entire day cleaning off your bait and probably not getting bites.

Wood's not that good either - snag city.

Baits shine on cleaner bottoms - sand, gravel even a few rocks is OK.

For that weight, I’d agree with M power, and probably F/XF action - something similar to what you’d throw a jerkbait or spinnerbait on. I’d shy away from anything moderate or cranking based. Too easy to overwork the lure in that instance.

I use the Dobyns Champion Extreme 742 for 3/8oz - 5/8oz blades, I find it to be an excellent rod for those light hops and semi yoyo presentations that are essential for blade baiting.

Thanks for the info.

i would fish the 3 power with fluoro. and yes blade baits can be a nightmare in grass but if the grass is short you can rip them out of it and the 5 power with faster tip would help with that.
