SLX glass Crankbait rods - M or ML?

Featured Replies

Hi, I am looking for information on the SLX glass rods, and haven’t been able to find much. Looking for a rod to throw mostly Bomber Model A (6A; 6-8ft) and KVD 1.5 DD crankbaits in rocky structure (Idaho/Oregon reservoirs). Has anyone tried out the glass SLX in medium/moderate and medium-light/moderate?

I handled the medium/moderate in a store and it felt awful heavy - especially since I’m mostly targeting ~12” smallmouth. I haven’t been able to handle a medium-light/moderate action so I am curious how it compares. Is the blank a lot smaller diameter on the medium-light?

And finally, if I did go with the medium instead of the medium-light, could I get away with occasionally throwing a 5XD? I’m not fishing crankbaits that deep currently, but I’d like to give it a try.

Thanks, I appreciate the help!

A glass rod is going to feel heavier than a graphite composite one because it is.  That being said, the Med/Mod will suit your needs better than the Med-Lt/Mod (check the lure weight recommendations) and don't concern yourself with the fact that many of the smallmouth you'll be catching are around 12in.  They can bend a moderate action rod and keep things exciting.

It, the Med/Mod wouldn't be my choice for throwing the 5XD, but occasionally you can get away with using it.

I have kept the 1 glass rod for tossing live bait fish. it is a slower acceleration rate if I start to fast. I have never ripped a live bait with the glass rod.  Great bank & live bait rod.
