Lake Champlain smallmouth in April

Featured Replies

I usually hit the northern part of LC in mid May but was thinking of going last week of April. What can I expect?  Anyone have experience with SM or LM this time of year up there?  Is is a good time to go?  Thanks

The water is very cold but the ice should be out. Prespawn and the fish may be harder to find. The weather is variable and can be bad. I stay near shore in April and so don’t target sm at that time i am looking for pike. Mid may is the start of peak. April is more of a challenge but still worh trying.

At the end of Apri you can get on big schools of big smallmouth on the north end. I take advantage of it with square bills and jerkbaits. It not uncommon for me to boat 20+ fish with several over 4 pounds. You will also be running into a bunch of pike.
