What is the lightest line you would use on a 70 size spool?

Featured Replies

Looking to explore some options for a super versatile set up. A 6'10" M-F rod, 2 piece, rated 1/8-5/8oz lures and 8-14lb line. Pairing it with a SLX 70 MGL reel. Will be throwing weightless trickworms/senkos, Ned rigs, mepps inline spinners, 1/2oz spinnerbaits (true weight, 5/16oz on the package), 1/4oz finesse jigs, and under 1/4oz Texas rigs. This combo is meant to be an all purpose/multi species combo for travel, fishing from the bank or kayak. Fishing all types of water from ponds, rivers, to lakes.

Currently have 40lb 832 braid as main line and was going to use 6lb and 10lb Yo Zuri hybrid as leaders or straight braid around light to moderate vegetation.

But now I am wondering if I should go lower on the braid main line for the lighter stuff due to diameter. What's the lightest all purpose braid you would use? I want to avoid dig in issues with the braid. I have a spool of 20lb 832, but not sure if that's a bit thin for the spool/environment/shock strength.

I dont know 832 like I do power pro. I love PP 30lb test on my 70 but also have used their 20lb test on a curado 50 and not had burying issues

40lb braid main line, you are not gonna feel what you lure is doing on bottoms not even 20lb braid with especially weightless worm or light jig head. You might still catch those hit and run bite but you would loose majority or subtle bite. IMHO my experience. For all purposes line 8lb Copolymer or 8-10lb FC would be better.

BTW don’t try to whip hard on 1/2oz spinnerbait if you decided to go with 20lb braid. ????

Something to remember about Braided & solid lines. After 500 casts on NEW  both braided & the solid lines.

The braided will wear off the color coatings & get much softer.

The solid lines DO NOT CHANGE.  The 100' Line STILL HAS COILS along the full length.

A WEIGHTLESS lure ?  Good luck feeling that 100' coil pulling your rod.

I have a Ande 4# Monofilament spinning set up and a used 6#  Braided spinning setup.

The old braided is straight to the weightless lure. The solid line has partial loose coils.

run 100 feet of both lines out side by side. Braided  keeps getting softer and straighter.

First start of each season has the non braided coming off the reel in coils.

I use the tiniest black snap on the braided line to unhook the lure & let the current untwist the line if it gets too twisted

I have one of my 70s set up as a dedicated Ned rig.   I used 6# fluorocarbon until last fall when I switched to Yozuri hybrid 6#.  I have different setups for those other baits you mentioned.

Good luck using 6lb braid on Curado 70 ???
