Fishing kayak

Featured Replies

Well I was at dicks the other day (feeding my tackle obsession) And noticed they were getting their spring stuff in which included kayaks. They have a sit inside for 200 on sale It's called the potomac, and on their website. I realized that a fishing yak would be the best solution, It's portable, Light, manueverable, And CHEAP, my dad and I could even have our own, rigged to our liking. I want to keep this simple, Maybe a fishfinder when I get some spare cash but I was wonderring about my tackle storage, Because It's a sit inside You cant put a milk crate behind you and I prefer a sit inside because they are easier to paddle, I was thinking about leaving my gear in my tackle back and slide that behind my seat, And have a small tray to hold some "go to" lures. Is this a good Idea? And also whats a good Idea for a rod holder? I wouldn't be trolling, I just need something to transport my rods with, What a good product, I can also rig something out of PVC too.

With a drill and some mounting hardware you can attach anything to your yak.  As you can see from the picture my crate is behind me where I store anchor, net, water etc.  I attach the crate using bungees secured to pad eyes you can screw into your yak.

The rod holders in front of me are from Scotty

I keep my tackle in a tackle bag.

So, you have numerous possibilities.  Once you get past the initial fear of drilling a hole in your yak it is great customizing your ride.

does any one have a rod holder suggestion?

I use a couple of the #350 Rodmaster II's, the #280 baitcaster/spinning holder, a couple #254M extenders, a couple of their #344 flush mounts and a #241 deck mount. If you buy your gear from some place like Hook1, you can mix and match rod holders and bases to suit your particular needs.

There's only one #350 Rodmaster shown in the pic below, but that's all I needed on that outing.

For tackle storage I use an older version of the Plano guide series.

It holds four 3600-series boxes and I can mix/match boxes to suit my needs. It fits inside the yak, between my knees or I can push it forward to get it out of my way. Toss a couple 32 oz. water bottles and a bilge sponge behind the seat and a cheap take-down paddle in the rear hatch (just in case :) ), and I'm good to go.

How much will one run me, I want to carry a spinning and a caster.

Roughly $20 each with the base of your choosing or slightly less without a base. I buy mine from Hook1 because their service is absolutely fantastic and their prices are typically pretty good, but Scotty rod holders run about the same price regardless where you buy them.

If you're looking to save a buck or two and don't mind boring a couple holes in your new toy, you can pick up a couple of these for less than the price of one Scotty...

Just make sure you have the necessary clearance BEFORE you start to cut.

I had factory rod holders in the rear deck of mine but I covered over them with the 344's. I like the security of the Scotty rod holders and prefer to keep my reels up away from the water if I can help it.

I've bought two of the Potomac kayaks. Only paid $180 or so when I got them, one last October, the other last month. One is setup with a Cuda 350s/map and two Berkley rod holders.

And to keep things cheap look for the Field&Stream SQ220 4-piece paddle. $35 at Dick's -Item Number: 3079317. I had to order my second one online since the shops in the area didn't have anymore.

I keep an anchor and float in the storage area with the cover removed. I use the elastic strap to hold on a milk crate which holds my tackle box. Once I get to a fishing area I just keep the box between my legs.
