A '97 boat with an '89 motor?

Hmmm.

Possibilities. 1. The guy trashed his '89 hull but lifted the motor off of it and put it on a newer boat that had no engine.

2. He blew the motor that was on the Bee and found a cheap, older replacement.

I'd have a pro go over both the boat and motor. Offer $2500 and go from there if you're still interested. Bee's were pretty good boats.  Having that big of a disparity between hull age and motor age is normally NOT a good thing when it comes time to resell.

I agree, but if the motor checks out ok, i'd say its a really good deal...Talk him down a few hundred to replace the carpet

I agree.  With a restored gelcoat, new carpet, and a maybe a new trolling motor, that could a heck of a fishing machine for  $4000-4500.

Have you had the boat in the water yet with the seller?

And if it needs new carpet check to make sure the flooring has not rotted, And since the boat and engine combo are not a match look really hard at the transom and make sure you dont see any damage or any signs of repair if you question ANYTHING at all I would have to walk away from that deal.

Ask for a test drive on a lake to see how it runs!

  • Super User

Get it checked by a good, honest marine mechanic. It will be the best money you've ever spent.

Problems;

Transom: check for cracks and rot

Stringers: check for rot

Flooring: check for rot

Trailer: wiring, springs, axles, lights

Wiring: check for rot, replaced wiring(Not good), corrosion

Switches: In working order? what about the trim?

Electronics: Working order?

Trolling motor: Is it in working order and is it large enought to do the job?

Batterys: How old and check for a dead cell(Hydrometer will tell you).

MOTOR: compression check(Bring it up to operating temps), remove spark plugs, check twice, and if you can do a leakdown that's even better.

On the water test. Better yet, go fish it for a few hours. check the livewells, and for any other leaks. Bilge needs to be working to. If the seller balks, walk away.

Good luck, offer him $2,500.00- $3,000.00 just to try him out. The worst he can do is say no.

Actually talked the the guy Who put the motor on the boat

he said motor was in real  good shape with low hours. turn out i work with his cousin.

Took it out the the river and it ran good (67 mph) just me in the boat. She Chinewalks a little on the top end but not to much.

Problems;

Transom: looked good

Stringers: ?

Flooring: good

Trailer: needs new keel roller a little paint, and a light on the right side.

Wiring: good

Switches: They all work

Electronics: Yep

Trolling motor: 54# 12/24  but 1 trolling battery.

Batterys: ok shape, i have some i can replace with

If you don't have a shop check it out and do a compression test you deserve what you get.

You keep posting another problem you found with the boat, carpet, seat covering, gel coat, gas gauge, NOT the original engine, chine walking, THROTTLE IS STICKING!!, and the the trailer needs work too? Do you really think this boat is worth what he is asking? And do you realise how much you are going to have in this boat when you  fix what you listed?

You are getting screwed, You owe it to yourself to keep looking cause it sounds to me like this guy did not take very good care of this boat.

If you do buy it I wish you the best of luck!!!

So true. Sounds like the boat will be a $5 grand boat and not a $3,500 one. And I don't believe the low hours story one bit. If the original owner used the thing so much that the boat needs repair on the hull, the carpet is worn out, and the seats are shot, chances are that he used it a LOT more than let on, and that would probably include the replacement engine as well. (How is the guy who put the engine on the boat related to the seller? And how long ago did he do the work?) Also, a sticking throttle cable will need to be replaced and would indicate lack of maintenance and proper boat storage. And why in hell would a seller not fix that problem before he offered it up for sale?????? thats huge!

Lots of boats with that engine size available around on Craigslist and many look to be a much better shape. I would rather pay more initially and know that the person took care of and stored the boat properly.

And I had no idea what Chine walking was. Found this link http://www.kencook.net/Chinewalk.html Could be the boat, the driver, or the water. Being that it has a replacement engine, I would wonder if the install was done correctly?

The first time you hammer down on a rig that will run you will find out what chine walking is. You will need to learn to drive through it or keep the boat off the pad.

You know what they say BOAT stands for:

Bust

Out

Another

Thousand

Good luck with your purchase.

Its not that bad lol the carpet i worn rather, the seats are fine it just the seat in the middle was stepped on and has a split in it.

All gauges work My dumb butt did not know to hit the master power switch

the few places on the hull are the size of nickles maybe.

he said he would replace the cable.

Im just picky when i described it i may have been to harsh.

Yea I know Thats what I do for a living is turn wrenches,

But I bought a basket case Nitro to do the same thing and have not finished it yet it's still a work in progress but I use it every time we go out and fish and I did not pay near what you did for yours.

That's what was getting me worried about yours, Man the way you were talking I thought you were really being taken advantage of and that is something I really hate to see.
