will a 32LB thrust be efficient for 12 foot flat

Featured Replies

hey,

im going out this weekend for a full day of fishing. I bought a new 185 something battery. the bass pro gentlemen said it would be more then enough for 1 full day of trolling.

however, do you think this Minn Kota 32LB thrust troll motor will handle a 12 foot flat row boat for a day?

Thanks,

Unless there is a lot of wind or current you should be okay. Be sure you charge the battery fully before you go and as soon as you get back.

Unless you're wanting to cross a large lake fast, it'll be fine.  I have a 28# thrust on my (heavy) 14' jon boat.  For a while a few years ago it was my only motor and did all I wanted.  In fact I think it's too fast on it's lowest setting when when I'm cruising the shoreline trying to throughly fish the cover.

A 32lb thrust tm will be more than sufficient for your vessel for an all day excursion.  I use a 33lb bow mount tm on my decked out 14' flat jon and it moves the boat just fine.  Granted I use an outboard for longer runs, but I'm on the tm 95% of the time that I'm on the water.  Just recharge your battery as soon as you get home.

Yep, you'll be fine.

Don't leave the oars on the bank. A 32 lb thrust will work, but when it is time to upgrade - go ahead and upgrade. There is no substitute for troling motor power. Minn Kota makes a 55 lb 12 volt trolling motor. With variable speed and maximizer you'll be able to go slower and go faster and you battery will last longer.

Still, make sure you always have a a couple of spare shear pins and don't leave the oars on the bank.

A 32 should be ok. That being said, there is nothing wrong with having more power. Make sure you have a good TM battery - a deep cycle in the category of a serious 24 at least. If you go to a 55 with a series 27 battery, you'll be golden.

BTW....is this "flat bottom" you speak of, made of aluminum or wood? Makes a huge difference. And like what already has been said, do NOT leave the oars behind!  ;)
