Battery wiring help...

Featured Replies

I just got a new minn kota, but the power wires are too short. I need about six more feet.

What gauge wire should I use?

How should I join the wires?

I believe it's #6, it's what i've used in the past. I soldered the connections and put shrink wrap over them. Hope this helps.

Yep ..... 6 is correct

Thanks for the help. I might need a torch to solder 6 gauge.

I find a split bolt connector is mush easier. and they're easier to undo if needed. Just wrap with plenty of electrical tape.

#6 is ok but you are in a damp enviroment on the water go to your local hardware store and get weatherproof butt connectors,  Once the connections are made you heat them up like heat shrink and they will have a chemical reation to heat that allows a sealer to form around the wire.

I'm a lineman and I HATE splitbolts.  OK for short term, but baaaaadd for permanent connections.

also...use some dielectric grease in the connector like "Penetrox" to eliminate corrosion.

I solder butt connectors when I need to make a splice.  A Benzo-Matic works fine for that, and use rosin core solder.  I then use a heat shrink made for battery terminals that has a heavy sealant to seal the joint.

excellent way to do it.

That's the way I did mine. Sorry left out the butt connectors earlier. Use the shrink tube with the sealer inside. You'll never have a problem.
