Gulp vs. powerbait

Featured Replies

I was just wondering which was better.  I just bought a gulp sinking worm and lost a fish on that.  I also own the powerbait chiggercraw and haven't caught anything but have had a couple bites.  I can tell the difference in the 2 smells.  Does that have anything to do with it?

Never used Gulp! but the 7" Original Berkley Powerworms and craws have put a LOT of fish in my boat over the years.  My confidence in them is super high again.  I set out this year to get rid of my inventory of them and switch to another brand but I've reconsidered and will buy them as long as they make them.  This last weekend I had a good bite going(despite "dog day" conditions) and every fish I caught on Saturday came on the Powerworms.  In fact, every fish I've taken on a worm this year was on them.  My opinion on their baits is....you better pay attention when using them because they will take them deep and if you aren't careful you'll kill a lot of fish!!!  Let them have it too long and you'll be trying to pull a hook out of their stomach.

I don't think their Powerbait scent in the bottles is worth the cost but their baits sure seem to be.  I have no reason to even try the Gulp! stuff.

I'll second the original Berkley powerworm.  I don't think the different sents will cause a difference in your catch rate.

Gulp! is way better than powerbait. I can't catch a fish on powerbait but they love a Gulp! Nightcrawler fished on a dropshot.

I use GULP! to locate the fish - they will be attracted by the scent - but GULP! is more expensive and doesn't hold up as well, so after I locate 'em I will switch to either a Power Bait or a Zoom Worm.  If I'm throwing a Sinking Minnow, I will switch to a Senko.

Powerworms get my vote.

Power worms get my vote too. I've been trying Gulp for river smallmouth for a year now and I can tell you that they'll spit a gulp bait quicker that any other regular plastic (or powerbait) I've used. I've watched many smallmouth inhale and exhale it in the blink of an eye. Power bait and real salty baits typically get swallowed.

I've caught some good fish on Gulp but it just doesn't seem to have the same appeal, I think it might just be too much scent, if that's possible. Just my .02

btlva, I have had just the opposite experience - I have never known that a bass (SM or LM) has ever spit out a GULP! - the problem I have had was when they short strike and bite off the tail (this happens with both bass and blue gill).

Original Powerbait > Gulp!

You don't need 400x scent dispersion, sight is the main hunting sense for bass anyways.

The only advantage i see in Gulp! is bass maybe holding on a tad longer, but im sure your a good fisherman right?

You know when to set  the hook  :D

I think both products have their time and place.

I have caught fish on both but don't use each interchangably. I use powerbait worms a great deal, I also use GULP! worms and more recently a little experimenting with Lake Erie smallies and the GULP! goby.

I'll tell you this, in my recent experience, if a Lake Erie smallie gets ahold of a GULP! goby, it dosen't get spit out.

My cat loves Powerbait.  He will sit beside my tackle bag for hours.  For some reason, he doesn't have the same preference for Gulp.

Once made the mistake of leaving two bags of plastics sitting on the coffee table.  One bag of Powerbait, one bag of Gulp.  An hour later, the Powerbait bag was in shreds, he didn't touch the Gulp bag.

Berkley plastics are not the bulk of the plastics I fish, but I do have some Powerbait 10" worms and some gulp products.  I haven't used Gulp enough to make a judgement, but I do like the 10" worms.

That's an interesting obvservation.  Burley...are you the one who asked earlier in the season about using Slider heads?  I can't remember who it was for sure but I thought it was you.  Was just wondeirng if you'd had any luck with them.
