Hummingbird 798 SI Question

Featured Replies

I just put one of these on my Minnkota Powerdrive trolling motor and I used it for the striper run up here on the Hudson and then I went out to a lake and fished out there for 4 days. I love the color sonar, but I am not impressed with the side imaging. I haven't seen any good images at all. And when I run the trolling motor, the screen goes from the crystal black background to a fuzzy white. I do not have the power hooked up to the trolling battery, it is to the cranking battery. Am I getting interference from the trolling motor? Or do I have something set wrong in the unit? I have read the manual numerous times and I don't know what to try. Transducer bracket is made by transducer shield that fits the Hummingbird puck.

Yes, you are getting interference from your trolling motor. Call Humminbird for their trolling motor interference kit and also check the trolling motor to see if it has the internal grounding wire (brown I think).

I get interference with my Motor Guide that I cannot eliminate.

Getting good images with side imaging on a trolling motor can be tricky.  Side imaging needs movement to create the image and speeds between 1-5 mph work really well.  The straighter you go the clearer the images also.  The rotation of the trolling motor will distort or streak side imaging.  It can work great, just need to understand how it works.

I have seen the distortion when I turn the motor and I realize that you do have to be moving to get images.  My problem is my screen gets fuzzy when I bump the trolling motor on.  I would like to get this thing working,  I was really excited about getting this unit,  I could have just got a color sonar unit and saved my money.  I'll keep working at it and hopefully get it worked out.

I have the same unit and have no problems with the the actual unit but the second time out the transducer mount broke.  Why would they make it out of plastic.  for a 1000 dollars they should make it out of stainless steel.

Just a note. I finally found my problem. In my haste to install the unit in the spring I coiled up my transducer wire and threw it up under the bow of my boat so it would be out of sight. What I forgot was that my trolling motor wires to the plug run up through there. I moved the transducer wire out of there and guess what? No more interference. I also updated unit to the latest software and I now have down imaging. It is very cool!!! ;D Thanks for all your replies and help.
