Looking for canoeing/camping in NH

Featured Replies

Does anyone on here know of any good lakes or rivers that are good for canoeing and camping?

That's weird that you say that, Umbagog is actually on my list of possibilities! Is it good fishing?

smallmouth heaven!  The place is rocky close to shore but makes for great smallmouth action.

Chatterbaits and Xraps work great here.

Trout also if you are into it.

The area is a wildlife refuge (sp?) no more building around the lake. If you want peace and tranquility with great action and not crowded, this is the place. I try to go once per year me and the guys for our annual fishing trip.

you can even rent remote campsites on islands out on the lake for as little as $15 per night (last years prices) If your really hardcore.

Throw all your supplies on the boat...motor to your camping spot.....set up camp......go fish.

Heaven no? ;D

Absolutely heaven. I talked to the campground today. Those remote sites sound great. I think the price hiked since last year. Its $23 I think. And its $30 something for the main campground. We will be arriving late Friday night, so I think for the first night we will stay in the main camp and Saturday night at a remote site. How is the fishing up there? The only species I can find for Umbagog is Smallmouth, Pickerel, and Northern Pike.

So how does that work if you want to bring a boat. is there a place to launch and leave your trailer while your on the island camp sites?

Looks really cool. I might try that place this summer

Nephew fished the Rapid River in Maine flowing into Umbagog for brookies with great success. He is 100% C&R but got some great pictures of quality brookies.

You can bring your boat and load in right at the campground. They have a fueling station and reservable docks. There's plenty of trailer parking. You can even rent a cottage for $80 a night. Cottage 1 is right on the beach. We were aiming for it but it was already booked. The lake is absolutely beautiful. I didn't have much sucess fishing wise because I was in awe with my new (and first) fish finder - that and the views are amazing. We saw 9 moose, 2 racoons, 1 beaver, and 1 deer this weekend. Umbagog is my new favorite place on the planet. We had a blast and we strongly recommend it to anyone. It was an amazing, unforgettable weekend - kid free.
