Skeeter Boat Problems

Featured Replies

Maybe someone out there will have some ideas on this. About ten months ago I bought a new Skeeter 20i from a Skeeter Dealer. The boat has a problem porpoising at low speeds. Speeds below about 35 mph and it is impossible to nail an RPM because of the need to change throttle settings so frequently to stop the porpoising when it starts. The boat runs and handles beautifully at speeds above 40 with no tendency to porpoise. I fish a lake with lots of standing timber and racing around the lake at high speeds is, well...stupid. The lake is like Toledo Bend with no boat lanes except the lake is in Florida.

Another problem is I have a Humminbird depth finder with side imaging which does not paint any structure. I have been through the owners manual several times and since I have been an airline pilot for several decades understanding electronics is something I have a pretty good handle on. Humminbird has been great about the problem and has worked with me on the water several times, but with no results. They believe it is some sort of rigging problem as do I because the unit does everything else perfectly except mark structure in side imaging mode.

I have been to my dealer who can't find any problems and says there must be a problem with the unit plus the unit was wired at the factory and it is their problem.

At that I went to another Skeeter dealer and got no help because they did not sell the boat.

Both dealers can't get any thing that resembles a response from the Skeeter factory; which brings me to my real problem. I have been leaving messages at the Skeeter factory customer service and an individual extension that was given to me by one of the Skeeter dealers. I have received no response from them; not even a "We are sorry you are having problems, why don't you try this?"

The wiring on the Skeeter is a nightmare. It has no breaker panel and nothing seems to go to or come from any central point; everywhere you look it is just a mess of wires that hang down from the console and float around in the equipment compartment. The dealer told me that that is typical for any Skeeter. I saw all this when I bought the boat but assumed it was because it was not rigged. The wiring hung down and interfered with the hot foot.Nothing is labeled. Let me repeat that NOTHING.

So now to the real question. Anybody out there have any suggestions how to proceed to at least get a boat that kinda does what was advertised. I love the boat as a fishing platform and for the looks, but under the pretty face it is a $50,000.00 + piece of junk.

got a 18' skeeter that had the same problem , skeeter are weight sensity  had to put a hydro foil on to get it not to porpoise made a  big difference  you may be power trim up to much when it start power trim down a little

Could you be a bit more specific about your boat?  What HP is your engine?  Is there a jackplate, etc.  This may better help the fellas here to diagnose your issue.  As for the wiring I have a big ?????

50K is a ton of money to not be happy with the boat.  Are you still under factory or dealer warranty?

Guess you're right about specifics.  I have run boats of many types for many years and tried not to waste time explaining the obvious things you would try for a problem like this.  The boat came with a manual jack plate so I tried lowering the motor 1/4 inch at a time about 1 1/2 inches then went back to the factory setting and repeated and reversed the process only going up.  I tried every possible trim and throttle combination and no help.  I have the Yamaha 250 by the way with the factory prop.  I decided to try a hydraulic jack plate and had the Skeeter dealer install one, and yes it does have the wedges.  Still with every combination of motor/jack trim the problem exists plus the boat is the slowest to plane that I have experienced and I have owned and run dozens of boats.  The problem occurs after you get on plane and try to keep the speed under about 35.  If you hit any sort of wave, the porpoising begins and the only way to stop it is to accelerate briskly.  When you come off plane to stop the boat announces it's presence by porpoising violently and again no combinations of trim or throttle help.

Yes it is still under factory warranty which is useless if they won't talk to you.  I have left messages with Maria in customer service and never received a return call.  I was told to speak with Robert in customer service but he has been mute after dozens of calls as well.  Maybe I should just trade it.

Sounds like a bad setup. Carry it back to the dealer you purchased it from and have them do a water test. That will answer your questions. Personally i would have allready been camped on their front door wanting some answers. As far as the electronics, if they came on the boat it's the dealers responsibility to fix that too. Telling you to contact Humminbird is a bunch of you know what. Even if it requires contacting HB they should be helping you out.

What jackplate and how much set back do you have?
