o.k. so here's the good...

I just bought a 1995 Nitro DC2000 with a 200 Magnum Mariner EFI on it with only 145 hours.  Dude only wanted 5k for it, so I couldn't pass it up.

Now for the problem...

The hydraulic trim keeps going out on me and the wires are getting very hot.  The seller told me he was going to change the relays, but I dont think that is the problem.  I talked to a marine mechanic and he said it sounded like the motor in the trim was going out and drawing too much therefore cutting off.  So the question is, does anyone know where I can find a new motor for my trim and how much they run for?  Or do I have to buy the entire new unit?

The relay contacts are very small and can offer a lot of resistance when the motor is running. Just swap the two relays with each other as a test.

If the motor wires a still getting hot, have the motor rebuilt. Finding a source may be dificult but rebuilding is an option.

This is just the trim motor your talking about and not the complete Mariner outboard right?  I sure hope so cuz I dont want to pay to rebuild the complete outboard.

  I had the same problem last summer on my system. I too thought it was the electric motor at the time but before I spent that kind of money, I checked all the connections, switches and wiring. My system had no relays and my switch on the console was getting hot. I was going thru switches every few trips or so. I ended up installing an old style Ford starter relay so I wouldn't have so much current going directly thru the switch. Problem solved.

I'd check your relays first. Those Force and Mariner electrical motors were almost bullet proof as long as no moisture got in there. One of the few things they did right.

If the motor is still functioning correctly and the only problem is hot wires, I'd look at the connectitons and relays before you spend money on something that might not have a problem.

Yes, Bass_Fanatic, the trim/tilt motor. The size and construction is similar to a motor cycle engine electric starter motor.

O.K. Thanks guys.  i am going to change the relays out this week and I will let yall know if that solves the problem.
