I am interested in purchasing a jon boat, but I have no clue where to start.  I want something I can fish with, but also take my wife and two kids out crusing on small lakes and rivers.  Any suggestions are welcome.  I could use some expertise on hp, trailers, boat size, etc...

Go to craigs list and e-bay and check your local listings in the news papers.

Since you have a family, I suggest at least a 14'.

Not sure of the area you are from but most all of the Jon boats I have seen have around 10 hp engines and work pretty well, But you can power it with a strong trolling motor too if your waters don't allow gas engines.

With a family of four , you should consider in getting a 18 ' semi-v jon with at least a 55 " wide bottom which is more stable and safer for the family.

I live near Cedar Rapids, IA.  The Cedar River would be one of my destinations.  There are several small lakes in the area, one of which has a no wake regulation.  I don't know if others have such regulations regarding wake or gas engines.  I will look into it.  Thanks for the suggestions.  More are welcome...
