Berkley gilly

Featured Replies

Grabbed some of the 4 inch Gilly's. Watched a few videos on how to rig it. Tried rigging it with a EWG on both the middle and bottom "slots".

The thing didn't fish upright at all. All it did was swim on its side, upside down, swirl around etc.

I have heard about sticking a nail weight in the nose area, although it seems like that might affect hookup ratio? Seems to me it would get in the way. Was thinking of possibly trying a small weight in the belly maybe? Although this also seems like it would affect hookup ratio to me. What size weight would be good for this? Not really sure how much weight would be needed for it to swim upright. But don't want to go to heavy. I have some bb split shot I could use on a screw lock to use as I don't have nail weights. I have some heavier neko rig weights as well. Another thing I could try is a 1/16 oz jig head with no hook, that I have been using as a neko rig weight.

Drop shotting the bait seems like it would be a good idea but wondering what size and type of hook to use?

Side note, bait skips very easily.

Use a small nail weight in the lower chin below the hook shank.

Yes I've been having this issue also, frustrating... I don't own any nail weights but from a youtube video I watched that seems to fix it.

my go to for a nail weight is a screwlock with a split shot attached to it.

I also recently started using a small old 1/16th swimbait jig head.  I had to cut the hook for a gut hooked fish, but I can still use the jig head because of the bait keeper, as a nail weight for neko rig or what not. I bent what was remaining of the hook as well to  help  keep  it in place.

or use some old tiny screws or what not. nail weights are something I wont buy when theres so many other cheap alternatives.

Will try the screw lock splitshot, I do have a huge bag of those.
