I'd like to hear whether or not he would advise people to get into the field considering the current state of affairs?

I’ve never asked him that. I know he is definitely old school though. He went from chalk boards to white boards to smart boards in a few years and couldn’t keep up. He also had a Masters Degree that increased his salary. For the final 10 years of his teaching, he was basically only teaching advanced statistics to HS students seeking college credit. So there was minimal riff raff to deal with.

He will still occasionally sub too every once in a while. He didn’t do it for 2 years during the pandemic because he’s a heart attack survivor and considered high risk if he got sick. But he has told me he receives no less than 20 requests to sub on a daily basis because there is a dire need. His only comment on that is the pay sucks as a substitute teacher.

I am pretty sure he spread his pay out over 12 months. It’s been 12 years since he retired from it full time.

Work for about 8 months and get paid for 12.  Not a bad gig if you can get it, and tolerate it.

Not sure how it works everywhere, but both my parents retired from teaching (elementary school) in the early 2000s and it was paid for the school year with the option to spread paychecks out over 12 months.  I think it's a common misconception that they're "paid" to not work over the summer/breaks, etc...  That said, in the state of NJ the teachers union was pretty good to them and they made out alright.

I hope to retire and fish, hunt, and shoot all the time, but sometimes feel like I'll never get to retire.  That said, I've worked 'from home' for the past 6 years and will never go back into an office. I have done calls streamside or in the field and will continue to do so.  I default to double muted unless I'm speaking. Company is great with work life balance and as a salaried professional (network security) it's about the job being done well on time and satisfied customers. I have starlink, t-mobile 5g home internet, a dually, and a 40ft fifth wheel - have internet throughout North America, will travel.  Alas currently taking care of elderly parents, so travel is limited for now.

to be honest, I have considered trying to get a job as an algebra or calculus teacher when I am done with this gig.   I can't see myself fishing that much.
