Question regarding ordering from japan to canada duty fees?

Featured Replies

I want to buy an excense 3000 off of a JDM website for around $500Cad (as opposed to around $750 if i were to buy it locally). Only thing I am a little wary on how much I may be charged for dutys and import fees.

Does any canadian here have experiences ordering tackle from Japan and could tell me how steep the import and duty fees are typically, to be honest I kind of got confused trying to find the answer on google.

Appreciate the help all!

The likelihood of getting hit with duty fees is extremely unlikely and even if you did you are saving $200+ leafbucks.

Thank you!

I think @LCG might be able to help you there. I remembered selling a reel to Canadian fellow and he had me ship to a friend in US to be picked up. He told me Canada charge duty fee even used reel.

I’ve had duty and taxes and often a brokerage fee tacked on to pretty much every eBay or jdm tackle order.

Canada customs may let it slide if it was under $100

The brokerage fee can also be significant depending on the company. Ups and fedex are the worst. Canada post and dhl being more reasonable.

Hello, fellow Canadian here, Ontario to be specific. The last reel I ordered from Digitaka was a Daiwa Alphas SV TW in late August for $241.50 CAD and fed ex charged me about $58.50 CAD for duty and handling fees.

I know friends in Ontario and Vancouver, who buy and sell online, and keep PO boxes in Buffalo and Seattle.

and noteworthy, our OP is rock-throwing distance from Buffalo.  Niagra Falls NY, Lewiston PO, etc.

I thought of this as well, but the gas and PITA factor (2 hrs from the border plus customs), it was easier to pay fed ex.

Would you be able to give me an example on the brokerage fees you’ve received? Didn’t even know about those so thank you for letting me know

You still save at least $100, don't forget our lovely 13% sales tax on top of the retail $750 locally.
