So, my friend tossed me a Berkley Gilly...

I was sorting through my hooks looking to find something with the proper length to fit the lower side-hook slot when something occurred to me. This bait will flatten horizontally when it gets bit and when compressed the hook's point will land in either the roof of the mouth or the tongue. 50-50 chance, I reckon. Am I mistaken? Any user input? I'm not down with tongue hooking bass if I can help it. It's often a death sentence.

Side of the mouth or roof.  Use a twist lock hook and make sure the hook point does not pass through the thin part of the body.  I like the 110 size the best slow rolled under the surface with no additional weight.  It will run upright or semi upright like an injured baitfish while having an s swim motion sort of like a gantrel.  It will turn on its side and fall and with the a thin wire hook you can get a sprial fall.  Super productive bait for shallow bass.  Small fish grab the tail and run off it it.  Big females lightly tap it and then pick it up on the fall.  Definitely let it drop if you feel a few small taps while swimming.  This was my go to bait this spring and early summer.  It just works.
