Well, i got a pretty good deal on a boat. I found a 2002 Tracker Pro Team 175 with a 40 HP. (Pic Below) I got this boat for 2k cause the guy needed the money bad. After I had it checked out, I need 2 new batteries, Tires, and I am going to replace the water pump. Now for my question... I really have never used a depth finder before, just the ole stick the pole in the water .

The last month or so I have been reading and watching youtube videos on fish finders, I want a SI DI Fish Finder but I have a few questions. I have went and looked at them and asked a few questions there but I wanted some others ideas as well..

If you has this same setup and was looking at a fish finder under 1500 what would you do and where would you mount the transducer and head unit...

Just understand, with that motor, you are not going to be getting on plane with much of a load without a strugle.  That's another one of those packages BPS grossly under powered just so they could advertise it at a cheap price.

As for the sonar, turn fish ID off, that's usually the most worthless feature on most waters.  Understand it's main use is to identify structure and countours that should hold fish, not showing the fish, they will seldom do that.

I am not worried about how fast I get down the lake as most lakes I fish I never even crank the motor. There are just a few lakes were I will even open it up.

Besides the fish ID, I was more wondering if I went with a Down Imaging or Side Imaging sonar... if I do where would you mount the head unit?

If the transducer is on the back the you see what you have already passed... correct?

Also if I decide to get one I was thinking of mounting the screen at the drivers console and having it on a swivel..

40 horsepower will get an aluminum boat going pretty well though. Typically people who buy bass trackers aren't getting them to be speed demons lol.You got a great deal on that boat dude you shaved off a few thousand. Im gonna try to get a bass tracker for my first boat when im older

The ram is an excellent mount. My one bit of advice would be to go larger on the mount. Overkill is better than too small.

I got the biggest possible to mount my 898. It stays put, whether trailering at 75 - 80 mph or chattering over rough water.

You can mount a Ram on a horizontal, vertlcal or anywhere in between surface.

I would go with the large RAM mount ($100) if you have a heavier unit like the 898, and mount it where that small unit is setting now next to the console.  You'll want the GPS receiver mounted as close to the location of the xducer as you can get it.  You can get an 898 online for between $1200 and $1300 so you save over catalog/instore costs.  Some places ship free and no sales tax depending on where you live.
