Steering cable help!!

Featured Replies

Don't know if anyone can help diagnose this or not..

Last couple summers my steering has been very VERY tight..  me and my dad took it a part the last 2 years and lubed it up and the steering was managable...

went out last weekend and the steering was really really tight.. still was usable though..

well on saturday (morning of my tourney) i backed boat off the trailer and started the motor.. it was so stiff i couldnt hardly turn it...  I ended up turning it as hard as i could and something gave loose..  the wheel just spins freely.. Im thinkin i may have snapped the steering cable...

I needed one anyways but my question is this..

do i need the whole system (176 on BPS website) or do  i need just a new steering cable (about 30 bucks)

My boat is a 1990 procraft 15ft... motor is same year 40hp Merc...

any help would be very appreciated!!!

You just need the cable, but on some boats you will need to take the motor off the transom, to keep it straight, my best guess give it a try! Junebugman

Thanks man! If we get stuck I will definitely hit you up on that.. I wish I was more mechanically inclined..  My dad is a mechanic but doesn't have any experience with boats.. so it should be interesting..  Hopefully just a new cable will have it steering like new..
