mono line for new combo....

Featured Replies

My new calcutta 100te dc has just arrived and I am matching it up with the new glx

mbr783c med heavy GL loomis rod,  I am looking for a thin line with decent visability in the 12-14# range....  Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated... Thanks in advance.

Sounds like a sweet combo!!

Line (for me) depends on the cover you will be fishing... if real rocky or woody, I'd go with XT or Yo Zuri Hybrid but if you have just weeds or sparse cover, try the spiderwire xxx in the green box... but go one size heavier as it's under rated.  Go by the diameter... the 17# xxx is the diameter of 12# XT.  It's good line w/ low memory but it's not as tough around heavy cover.

Lots of people here like XL or Big Game for a general purpose line.  My partner uses Suffix in the red box and swear by it... I've only used it on spinning gear but am impressed with it there.

Bottom line (no pun intended) is that you'll probably try a few different lines before deciding on one.  So I'd go ahead and buy a spool of 2 or 3 kinds and use each for a few trips.

If you are wanting to just stick with mono, I would highly recommend Suffix Siege.  If you are willing to use a co-polymer I would use yo-zuri hybrid, and I would recommend using the smoke purple in that line.  I don't know why, but experience has been that it has even less memory than the clear.  I use both of these in 15#.

yo-zuri hybrid thats all I use other then power pro braid. Its real tuff around rocks. Also it seems like pike teeth can't even harm it.

I know Transition has a bad reputation. It was deserved. The first version of that stuff was nasty. The new formula, out this year, is a whole nuther story. I like it better than the other flouro lines I've tried, to date. As for visibility, I'm colorblind, so some lines are difficult for me. Transition shows up against the water very well for me. It has good visibilty above water, low vis below water, lower spool memory than other flouro lines, very good sensitivity and good abrasion resistance. The only thing wrong is the price.

Having said that, I'll be using it on more rigs next year. Except for my spinning rigs. It's merely OK on a spinning reel. Not great, not even good, just OK.

I use 10 and 12. Haven't tried 14 or above, so I don't know how that handles.

Cheers,

GK

By the way, a Calcutta on  GLX: BRILLIANT!!
