Drag Question

Featured Replies

I just found a Pinnacle Tara that I must have had for 7 years now and forgot I had even owned it.  I put it on a rod and it casts and reels in perfectly.  The only problem is that the drag is real jerky and sticks sometimes.  I am about to take it apart and see what the problem is, but I was wondering if anyone had any advice as to what I should look for first.  I assume the drag washers are either dirty or no good, but I am not sure.  I would appreciate any advice anyone could offer me.  Thanks.

There 's your answer, besides being dirty or disfunctional I add: lacking of adquate lubricant. I 've never owned nor seen any Pinnacle reels, but if memory doesn 't fail me Daiwa is the only manufacturer that has dry drag systems in their reels, all the rest are wet drag sytems. With time the drag grease gets "gummy" and doesn 't allow the drag to slip, just by cleaning the washers and adding new grease the problem of drag sticking gets resolved.

Raul has a good point.

But also the drag pad has probably compressed, and started to crawl up the side and over the lip of the D metal drag washer on top of it. (I'll bet that when you found it, it still had the same drag setting as it did when you forgot about it 7 years ago).

When you take the drag pad out, do it slowly it will probably be stuck to the bottom of the drive gear, and taking it out quickly will tear the pad. Once you get it out add one drop of oil to the pad and turn it over, this will place the lip that has developed, to the bottom of the drive gear, and then add one more drop of oil to that side. Replace the D metal drag washer and restack the tension washer's.

Your drags will never be what they were when you first got the reel, but they will work a little better.

Good luck

Thanks guys for the help.  When I took apart the reel the rubber drag washer was dry as can be.  I oiled it and it works good now.  Thanks again.
