hey i just grabbed a new rod last night on clearance at dicks for 39 bucks. just wondering if anyone has anything good or bad to say about it. its a Shimano Clarus IM-7 6'6" medium heavy trigger rod. 10 fuji eyes. nice cork handle, seemed like a great rod for the bucks and will match with my new baitcaster on its way.

My only beef with Clarus rods is their weight, I 've got that same rod but in heavy. Gr8 flipping and small swimbait rod, even though it 's rated for 1 1/2 oz it can lob those 2 oz swimbaits without much effort and the 9 inch rear handle allows you to cast them with both arms which compensates the heaviness of the rod.

And for 39 bux it 's a steal.

yeah it didnt seem to heavy, maybe the heavy has alot more weight to it. i compared it to a all star rod there of the same rating and the all star was alot heavier feeling and it was like 55 compared to 39. i cant wait to get my new reel so i can actually try it out but i think itll be good. im just lookin for someone to say weether they had a great expeiriance with it or if it was a junky rod when they used it.

You know I like good stuff and I 'm very picky with what I own, if I don 't like it then it goes out of my gear room. My experience with other models is limted, but one thing is for sure I like my Clarus and it does the job, junky is not a word I would use to describe it; good quality, built like a tank, affordable rod.

I recently started using baitcasting equipment, and after checking various models I opted for a Clarus rod myself. My needs are somewhat different than for the majority of the members of this forum - all my bass fishing is done from the banks, so I needed a longer rod. I got the Clarus Medium Heavy model (fast action) but at 8ft 6" and all I have to say up to now it's a wonderful rod. Yesterday I fished non-stop for two hours with it and I have to admit it was a pleasure holding it - much less tiring than my 9ft spinning rods I used up to now (I have a Daiwa Advantage Super Tuned reel on it).

It can handle almost any situation, even lures lower in weight than the recommended 1/2oz minimum, and up to now it did not have any trouble battling 5lb+ bass caught in heavy cover.

I am currently looking into a second baitcasting rod, and my first choice is yet another Clarus, a medium/fast 9ft (1/4-3/4oz lures) to use with some lighter lures.

I am not sure why you need such a large rod for bank fishing, but I have used one for years and it has been a good rod for the money.  Generally, from the bank, where I have been restricted to for 6 years, you want shorter rods because of the trees and brush you deal with.  Even after getting a boat I dont use anything over  7 foot, and that is a spinning rod.  Regardless for that price send me a couple.

Hi Pond Hopper,

I know we gwt a bit off-subject here, but I guess it depends on the sort of lakes I have to deal with. I have been fishing almost exclusively for bass for the last five years or so (save for two or three trout fishing trips a year).

Until about March I was using 6 1/2 to 7ft rods myself, all spinning equipment - and I was quite happy. One of the reasons I was using the shorter rods was that when I was checking for bass rods on the internet (no specific bass equipment was available in stores here) I could only find rods up to 7ft.

Last March a friend gave me as a present a custom-made 9ft medium / fast spinning rod (3/8-1oz) - it was one of 5 he ordered to his specs especially for bass fishing from the shore. I immediately noticed I could get a significant increase in the casting distance, but the eye-opener was a particular day in April when we encountered a line of bushes parallel to the shore. That line was well within the range of my new rod, as well as of one of my buddies, but however I tried, I couldn't get to it with my 7ft sticks. That particular day, all the bass we caught came from exactly behind the line of bushes - not a single bite in front of them! In the course of the next few weeks again and again the advantage of the extra 10-15 yards of range was proved.

Additionally, a longer rod has helped me a lot in fighting larger bass and manuevring them around shoreline thick brush. With my 7ft rods I would occasionally fail to steer a good fighter from some shoreline bush on time, but the longer rods have given me plenty of extra control.

My go-to collection now basically consists of two 9ft spinning rods (the one I described above, as well as a Talon med/hvy fast one), and over the last one month the Shimano 8 1/2ft baitcaster. The baitcaster switch was made mostly after handling some baitcasting equipment from some friends and enjoying it as well. Not 100% necessary, but why not master both ways! Plus, I realized that baitcasting equipment is much better on fighting bass in heavy cover, and in flipping / pitching situations.

The bottom line, it all depends on personal opinions... As it has been proven so many times in this forum, there are some basic ways to catch bass, but the little details on how everybody does it gets down to each individual! As long as you enjoy the sport it is really irrelevant whether you use baitcasters or spinning, long or short sticks, Shimano or Daiwa, Zoom or Yamamoto...
