Advice on a rod

Featured Replies

Hello all,

I currently have a medium heavy bait caster, a medium spinning rod, and a medium heavy spinning rod. Lately in the pond I am in I have found myself having best luck with ned rigs and small light rooster tails. I would like to get a better rod for to help me achieve a greater casting distance with these lighter lures. Would I be best with a medium light rod or should I go even lighter? Any advice would be appreciated. Id like to keep the whole setup under 150.00. It does not have to be a combo setup if you have recommendations of different reels and rods but if you recommend separate let me know what size spinning reel you recommend.

I personally use 1000 size spinners for finesse techniques, but many prefer 2000-2500 size

In any event - my recommendations for keeping it under $150

Daiwa Procyon 701 ML/XS - $80

Shimano Sedona FL - currently on sale at Bass Pro for $60 for the 2500

A longer medium light will give you a slight advantage. More often than not when presenting light lures your range gets cut.

Are you bank fishing? If so limited range is the name of the game. I’d lean into presentations which you can use on your current setups and avoid buying gear to chase 5’ more casting distance.

I have two spinning outfits.  Both using 6'6" Abu Vengence medium action rods, one with an older Blackmax reel, the other with a 13 Fishing reel I just bought last week. Braided line on both.  Caught a ton of fish on the the Black Max last year fishing mostly wacky rigs with it.
