So I took the reel apart and cleaned it a few times, the original rod broke, put it in a second rod I had and that broke when I shut the door on it…whoops

i finally bought a new rod and reel

Daiwa tatula ct 8.1

and a 6’6” medium heavy fast bass pro rod. Only had it a week or two but it is very nice

By using the old reel on different rods and taking it apart and repairing it and cleaning it I got a lot more comfortable. And with the rod switch on the old reel I could feel the difference the rod makes.  With this new reel I can cast significantly farther, it’s insanely smooth. I know it’s not the cream of the crop, but it is the cream of the crop to me.  Just thought I’d shoot an update if anyone ever has the same question.
