Fly rod w/spinning reel for crappie?

Featured Replies

I know this isn't the ultimate crappie forum but...I was in my carport looking at my unused fishing junk when I happened across a shakespeare UL spinning reel and my wal-mart black beauty 9 ft fly rod. I rigged the two together and it seems ok, granted I didn't put the other half of the rod on there.

Has anybody ever used a setup like this for crappie? I fish for em off a pier over my pvc trees and the farthest one away is 20 yards in 6ft of water. Will this thing work ok for fishing jigs in that cover. Snags are out of the question if you know about pvc trees.

what do you guys think?

I used ot do just that. As long as you don't need to make long casts, it should work for you. The small guides on a fly rod kill casting distance. The downside is a fly rod will not be a sensitive as a new graphite ultra-lite. That's not a big downside for me. I'm either casting and crnaking, using a roadrunner, small crank, or a grub on a jighead, or I'm using a tube beneath a float. Don't need much in the way of sensitivity for those applications. But, I do need the casting distance, so I quit using the fly rod and got a couple of BPS's microlite rods. They are cheap and quite functional.

Cheers,

I custom wrapped a Lamiglas 3wt fly rod with spinning guides just for crappie and bluegill fishing. Give it a try, you will like it.

I use a fly rod spining reel rig for crappie and blue gill.  3 lb crappie or a 1 1/2 lb blue gill are great on this rig.
