Need help with reel.

Featured Replies

The reel I use is an Abu Garcia ambassadeur 4600C3, and yesterday I took it apart for the first time because it needed to be oiled. So after I was done I tryed puting it back together and had a problem fitting it together again, whitch led to also taking off the reel. I finaly got it all put back together, but now when I try to turn the reel its pretty hard to turn. What happened? could it be I didn't put the reel back on right?

Well now you have stepped into it..Huh :)

You have something installed in the wrong orientation. Your reel is trying to bind on you. "Do not crank it when it is tight, you will wipe out a nylon idler gear that drives the line carriage".

The reel should have snapped together and the crank should be smooth and free.

You have these choices that I see..

YOU Use the schematic and re-build the reel the right way.

YOU Find a local tackle/repair shop and take it to them.

YOU Send it to me....

Good Luck..

Ok, so I see I screwed up pretty good. Now I want to fix that. I read online that you are not supposed to put oil in some places. Of course, I had done this already and put oil in every  nook and cranny I could find, as well as down in the reel. When I take it apart into 2 halves, the side with the reel will rotate perfectly. Its not until I put them both together that it is hard to turn the reel . The line spool turns, but just not very well. If I do have to take this fully apart, what can I do to pinpoint the exact problem?

I did something similar this past weekend. The gear teeth probably are not lined up. Take the handle side side plate off and slowly put it back on. Before you tighten down the small screws (I think there are three) turn the handle to see if its hard to turn. If so, repeat the process. If this doesnt solve the problem. Go directly to schematics and start over.

I would stop while I was ahead and send it to Reel Mech,  His price is cheaper than a new reel,

I would suggest getting the reel schematic out and figuring it out.  It's pretty doubtful anyone will be able to blindly tell you what part is in backwards over the internet.  Just one suggestion. check to make sure you've got that nylon holder that the spool pinion gear floats on in correctly, it might be backwards.

Well after geting the schematic and taking it all apart everything was in the right place. I put it back together but it was still tight.I thought that it was coming from around the spool, so I looked at it and then took off the two little white blocks on the centrifugal brake and it was fixed spinning perfectly. When I put them back on it is tight again. Do those white blocks need to be there or can I just leave them off?

I would not leave those off..........I think you'd be sorry down the road. I would agree with previous posts to send it to Reelmech and let him fix it for you. He is da man!  ;D ;D

USAF-16,

Take the spool out again, now take the white brake blocks and pinch them in toward the spool shaft. When you replace the side plate, make sure that the 2 blocks are piched in toward the spool shaft, and clear the chrome ring (brake race).

Snap the crank side plate back onto the frame, and while holding the reel together with your hand turn the crank it should be free, if it is then tighten the thumb screws down and your done..

If it is still tight repeat the process.

Tight Lines!!!
