How to "Install"/Use Fenders?

Featured Replies

I purchased these Taylor Made Low Freeboard fenders, as I saw some people use them on this site.

Maybe I need a different stye? They don't seem to work, with my cleats. I think my cleats are too far forward, so it doesn't sit correctly.

If these are the style you recommend, how should I "attach" them. See pictures.

If I need a different style, please let me know what I should get.

I use that same type of fender. I mounted additional cleats inside the gunnels just below the top line shown in the circle in your photo. You can use folding cleats so they don’t catch on stuff when not in use.IMG_0017.jpeg.a19b293b21ecc70ddde4c8a03272e76e.jpegIMG_0016.jpeg.bb8ca2d0d5a698a4e6e7fe73e8c0fd29.jpeg

I also have the same fenders, and hull.  You might try your rope over the cleat then up through the hole in the fender.  They are going to sag a little regardless how you tie them, given the cleat location. Picture 5 is how mine mostly look when deployed.  As long as your rubbing the fender instead of the hull, your good.

As Scott F said, because of the curvature of the hull, your going to want to put cleats midway of the other two.

@Bolar, do you like this style? Or do you think it's basically the same as the standard style?

Also, where/how do you use them? Basically when you are docking?

Most of my trips with my boat I stay in cabins that are lakeside and have a dock that I tie up to each day. I prefer this style as I find them easy to use and stay in place. Even if the water gets choppy, those fenders protect the top rail from getting scratched if the boat goes under the dock. I’ve used the longer style with a hole in each end. For me and my boat, those work better tied to a post on the dock. Not every dock is the same and I know that those freeboard bumpers will work on every dock.

Yeah, it's a compromise on which fender you use.  These low free board fenders will protect the top of your gunnel, which at a dock I occasionally use helps.   It depends on where you tie up, and what protects best.
