Thoughts on the Abu Garcia Veritas Tournament Rod for Peacock Bass

you dont actually catch anything beside peacock.  you are throwing topwater almost exclusively.  some jig stuff reeled in fast and twitchy.  big cats dont eat those.

you have to float a bait..and nobody is doing that.

the 200 size is perfect.   all the guide reels are crappy Abu reels no bigger than. 200.  all beat to S.  low line loads, etc.    a peacock fights like the dickens, but if my tatula 150 could best them over and over...a 200 would smoke em.

and wait until you see a weird mutant mini pink dolphin come and steal your 10lb peacock...it was bewildering.

I retire soon.  the Amazon river Peacock will be my retirement dance partner.  my wife pinkie shook on it.

@Phillyfanatic

Great choice on the Falcon rod. Look at the Crowder rods website and find E series Lite spinning rods. Either 6'6" or 7', MH or Heavy. They're inshore rods. I have the 7' MH, easily handles 30 lb fish.

I use a MH casting for bass in heavy Florida vegetation.

wow...nobody is reading anywhere that a 7' rod on the amazon river will be brutally sucky?  :D

Depend where he fish, but in the amazon you can catch with lures: trairoes, cachorras, dourados.

By the way, you saw the pink dolphin? what a privilege

I saw lots of pink dolphins. we would put the boat against cover to release the fish and give it a chance.

@phillyfanatic i misspoke. The other lure was the Perversa.  Not provenza like I said earlier.

I should use it here more.  It’s the only souvenir I brought home.  Ha!

I read about the Perversa somewhere else, too.  They said it was their best lure.  I’ll have to look it up and see if I can grab some.  Not to be confused with the Cerveza of which I’ll probably have many.

Now I’m grabbing a pair of 5’7” Falcon Cara Peacock MH MF rods for the jigs and smaller lures.  It’s two steps up from the Bucoo basic rod.  Lighter, better guides, etc.  Falcon lists them for $250 but I found a sporting goods store in Texas near the coast that has them for $209.

All I have to do is find short spinning rods.  One MHF and one HF.

Perversa is a model made by Borboleta. They work very well.

Cerveza is what I’ll be drinking while I’m throwing a Perversa!

Well I think I’m set on rods now.  For myself I got a pair of Falcon Cara Peacock medium/heavy fast 5’7 rods.  One will be paired with an AbuGarcia Revo5 STX 8.1:1 gear ratio 25lb drag bait caster and the other with an AbuGarcia Revo Premier low profile 8.1:1 gear ratio 20lb drag bait caster.

I got a Falcon Marsh Peacock heavy fast 5’7” rod that’ll be paired with another AbuGarcia Revo5 STX 8.1:1 gear ratio 25lb drag bait caster.

For my wife who uses spinners I found a nice rod from a store out of Florida called Vense Lures.  They make these rods specifically for peacock bass.  The medium heavy fast and the heavy fast are both 6’ which seems to be the best all around rod I could find for spinning reels for my wife.  It was brutal trying to find good peacock spinning rods that were shorter and had a strong backbone.  I looked at the Blackfin Dockwalker and the Bull Bay Bull Pup which were shorter, but I felt infinitely better about the Verse peacock rods.  I got her two MHF and a HF and all three will be paired up with the Shimano Stradic 4000XG 6.2:1 gear ratio and 24lbs drag spinning reels.

Going with Power Pro V2 Slick braid on all of them.  The MHF rods will get 50lb braid and 50lb fluoro leaders.  The HF rods will get straight 65lb braid.  Now I’m collecting lures.  The Verse Lures site had some nice looking lures.  I bought a few.

I got some really nice discounts on every single item so far, but for 6 rods and 6 reels I spent about $2,000.  That means that this won’t be the trip of a lifetime.  There will be more than one trip!  We are getting our money’s worth out of this equipment!
