flipping / pitching reel

Featured Replies

im looking to replace my quantum reel on my flipping stick.  I cast right handed and switch hands to reel. I was wondering if it is worth getting a reel with a flipping switch? or get a left handed retrieve reel? If i get a flipping reel it will be a castaic or if i get just a regular bc reel it will be a curado.

I also swap hands and use right side handles. It's so natural to me that I see no reason to change now. I don't ever remember it causing me to lose a fish or miss a hookset. JMHO

I use a Quantum Accurist which has a flipping switch, and I have no plans to change.I'm very happy with my set up.

I use the Castaic on a Croix 7'3" MH flipping stick and like being able to engage the spool with my thumb. It's not just a "time" thing but I like how smooth the cast feels when I don't have to rush to switch hands. Some right handed fishermen will use a left handed reel for flip/pitch so they don't have to switch hands. one problem you could run into with using a left hand reel is the line might get caught on the handle when flipping. The only down side to the Castaic is that when you palm it with your left hand you will bump the flipping switch and engage the spool. This makes it hard to keep the spool open if you want to. That being said, I love this reel but tend to only use it for flipping and Pitching.

One thing that i've noticed at least from watching KVD is that when casting he uses a right handed reel but for flipping or pitching he uses left handed to engage the reel  more easily if there is a strike

I'm a switcher too. I have tried twice now to convert to LH reels but its just not happenin'. If you are interested in trying the LH reel route,I suggest you buy something used or borrow one from your buddy before you go dumping a load of cash on something brand new that you may not ever get used to. Good luck with whatever you decide.
