St Croix AC62MXF vs AC68MXF

Featured Replies

After getting much good information on the AC68MXF from another thread I plan on buying one soon. But before I do I would like some info on the AC62MXF. I know the "62" would be a good Jerkbait rod but how will it compare to th "68" for weightless plastics, Spinners and Rat-L-Traps? The reason I ask this is because I tend to favor shorter rods for accuracy and limited space in my 14' boat. I have never fished a XF rod before and I am not sure how length effects this rod.

I have a 6'3" MXF high-end rod that was previously a 6'8" MF.  I dropped a coffee cup on it near the tip effectively breaking off 5".  After a moment of despair, I took the tip and reattached it to the rod.  This thing is now even better for spinnerbaits and lightweight plastics.  I still throw traps and crankbaits with it also.

If length is an issue to you, you should get the AC62MXF. You need this rod, and you know you do :o, The PC60MF is getting kinda lonely isn't it? Think how you will be snapping those worms into pockets you never thought you could hit, and think about the joy of tossing spinnerbaits with this baby!! Go and get it before I beat you to it!! :)

bugman,

I would go 6'8" unless you just can't afford the extra length.  An extra fast rod has a short, light, working tip so the longer the rod, the longer the tip...  the difference will be a little less than an inch [in working tip] but it will be noticable in casting.  The 6'8" will cast easier and will cast a lighter bait than the 6'2".   I am splitting hairs to a degree but the facts don't change.  IMO the casting and hooksetting are better on the 6'8", for whatever my opinion is worth.

My first boat was a 12' jon and I also had a 15' mod Vhull...  neither boat restricted my rod selection except with 7' and longer rods.

Thanks again for the helpful information. The local tackle shop I buy most of my gear is having it's spring show in a few weeks and I'll pick up the AC68MXF then. ( Sorry, Hot-N-Tot the bait monkey will have to wait) All I need now is about a foot of ice to melt off of my favorite fishing holes and I will be set!

You should get the 6'-2" rod in casting, and the 6'-8" rod later in spinning. The longer rod is more of a finesse rod, which is better suited for soft plastics, and light balsa lures like Shad Raps and floating Rapalas. The shorter rod, would be much better for worming and spinnerbaiting. These are my very deeply held convictions  ;D, but we both know you will have both rods before the next summer is over anyway. Actually, since you already have the 6' Premier, the 6'-8" rod should probably be your next, but it should definately be a spinning rod!! :o

I went to Gander MT today and compared the 6'2" and 6'8" rods. I found out that about 4" of the 6" difference is in the grip behind the reel seat. The 6'8" has one more guide and is about 2" longer from the reel seat to the tip. IMO I like the feel of the longer handle and I think it would come in handy when fighting larger fish.
