Topwater Treble Rod

Featured Replies

What’s the PopX rod for?

I see it’s listed as ultralight!

The lure rating also states 1/4-1 ounce.

1 oz on an UL????????

I've been throwing the PopMax, Giant Dog-X, and Choppo 90 on my GLX 842c MBR and IMO, it's perfection. The 842c MBR stick is incredibly versatile and can do a lot of other things as well. I think the 842c MBR in any G. Loomis line would be a solid option. I've been throwing Sunline Super Natural in 12# on mine.

What’s the best 1/4-3/4oz topwater treble rod in the NRX+, Steez AGS, and P5 lines? Mainly throwing Pop Xs and Showerblows 105s

Ever get something?

I've decided I'm getting a dedicated topwater rod as well and going to throw pretty much the same as you.

Last couple of outings I've been using my P5 OneTen Special and it works pretty good.

I'm either going to get a second one or something else.

Hey I actually ended up grabbing a P5 Javelin. I know it sounds weird but let me explain, I throw chatterbaits and single hook moving baits a TON. Wanted something to deep crank with as well. The javelin covers all of that plus the trebles. Heard its a great walking bait rod too and I love the extra length for casting at distances over flats.

I just carry two reels, a steez a ii in a 6.3:1 gear ratio with 16lb fluoro and a met dc in a 7 gear ratio with 30lb braid to mono leader for the topwater applications

Let me get some more time on the water with it and I’ll let you know. Going to test its limits further this weekend but will need some more time on the water to collect my thoughts

I prefer a Mod fast action. Im actually looking fir a rod that can handle 3/8-1/2oz chatterbaits and topwater trebles in the 1/4-5/8oz range. Mainly the heavier side of this spectrum. Was thinking the P5 Super Destroyer but haven’t used one before. Would be nice to have something versatile enough to go dock fish with which is what I heard this rod is made for.

Nah. Trebles and single hook don’t mix. You need more power and control with a bladed jig than a topwater. Two completely different sticks.

I kind of agree, but you could also make a big walking bait and a 1/2 oz bladed jig work on the same rod.

Rod preferences for bladed jigs are all over the place.

I think my experience in the southeast definitely clouds my judgement. If you’re up north I could see the combination of uses you presented.

I wonder how this would compare to the OneTen Special?

I'm leaning towards buying another but the thought of having two identical rods doesn't sit well with me for some reason.

The Evergreen Shower Blows rod is an amazing rod and super versatile.  Not the high end stuff mentioned here but fishes way over its price.  Great 1/2ish-3/4 oz treble rod (jerkbaits traps spooks).  Also pretty darned good with moving single hook baits (buzz, spinner baits as well as weedless 4.8 Keitech swimmers).  I have tossed senkos with it in a pinch and it worked great.  Even an ounce and a half Raid Osakana Slide glidebait was not a burden to use on it.  It’s not a P5 level rod but it's definitely a special rod.

@HawkeyeSmallie - I haven’t used that rod so I’m not able to compare w/ the 842c MBR.

Not a problem.

I’m going to just buy another Oneten Special.

I figure when it’s too cold out for top water I can have a couple of jerkbaits rigged up.
