Line Problem

Featured Replies

I just spooled up my reel (by hand) with 8lb Berkley Vanish, and every time I open up the bail the line basiclly pours off the reel. Now Ive been waiting a month I'd say for the line to "mold" onto the reel, but that hasn't seemed to happen. I want to fish with this reel but im afraid im just going to get constant tangles. Is there something I did wrong when I put the line on? Or how do I fix this problem, do I just have to wait longer for the line to mold to the reel? Please help  :'(.

What size of reel?

Did you use any line dressing?

Is it a 20/30/40?

20 size?  30 size?  40 size?

If you have the capability, I would tie the line to a tree or post and walk away until all the line is off the spool.  Then reel & walk while holding a bit of tension on the line.  Spray with silicone (like Reel Magic) and see if that helps.

Hey I use a President size 35 It is essential NOT TO OVER FILL THE SPOOL. You want to fill it 1/8" from the spool lip. That may solve your problem :)

I agree with Burley.  As you were spooling the new line on your reel you introduced a lot of line twist.  Take the rod AND reel into an open area, like a school yard, tie a small weight with a swivel to the end of the line, open the bail, and then walk slowly away from the weight.  Keep one finger lightly on the line spool  to prevent excess line from spooling off.  Walk all the line off the spool if possible.  When you have reached the end of the line,  take the line between your fingers above the first line guide, hold moderate tension on it, and then slowly reel in the line.  An even better way is to tie the line to a post, with a swivel attached between the line and the post, and then reel in slowly, with tension on the line at all times, as you walk towards the post.  Either method will pretty much eliminate your line twist problem.

One other comment.  Do not overfill your spool.  Keep at least a 1/8" gap between the spooled line and the rim of the spool.

Thanks Mike thats actually better than my statement its more accurate. Also after you fill your reel and if you are in a boat lt all the line out with the trolling motor goiang WITH NOTHING ON THE TAG END then reel it back in This is a great way to get rid of twist. Then while using spinning gear I always use a good barrell swivel( NO SNAP) on the tag end and a 8 to 14" lwaER AS THIS GOES A LONG WAY IN CUTTING DOWN ON TWIST

lAST BUT NOT LEAST; it is essential you do not ever reel in as a fish is taking out drag, this is a major source of twist and should be avoided at all costs.

That is true Mike.  I always end up with a lot of twist in line no matter how many times I flip the filler spool.

Mudman makes a good point as well.  If you are fishing a lure that likes to twist line (such as weightless plastics), use a quality barrel swivel (usually a #5 or #7 barrel for me) about 12-20" above the lure.

Or, you could just trash that line-twisting hunk of junk Flooger and get a quality reel like a Shimano®.   :)

 That is a new onw??????????

Fluorocarbon line is going to be stiffer than mono in general. It'll have the tendency to spring off like that. Like others have said, don't overfill the spool. It also helps to have a bigger spool. I think your biggest problem is that Berkeley makes the crappiest fluoro out of everyone. I like the BPS brand, but you should try out different FCs and change to something other than Vanish. And the KVD line and lure conditioner works too.

Hope that helps.

Chances are the spool is overfull.

Ike explained in a 2007 seminar and KVD explains in Bass Strategies

1. Ensure that the line is coming off the filler spool counter clockwise when filling.

2. Use silicone spray and spray it onto a cloth.  Hold the line ahead of the reel with the cloth thereby applying the conditioner as you reel.

3. Always close the bail by hand and draw the line to the roller.
