Whats a good drop shot set up??

Featured Replies

i was just wondering what a good drop shot set up is?? plan on using it quite a bit this year ::) ;D

My vote would be for a Shimano Crucial Drop Shot Rod (7'2" Medium Power) and a Pflueger President Spinning Reel, with 10 lb. Yo-Zuri Hybrid line.  I love this set-up and you can buy it all for around $200.

I just purchased a Kistler Mg 6'9" M/L Dropshot Spinning I think I'm going to be pretty happy with. :) I use Shimano spinning reels, not for any particular reason, I've just had good luck with them. :) All of my baitcasters are Daiwa, so I'm not brand loyal or brand specific. ;D There are alot of other good dropshot rods out there, Loomis, Daiwa, even Cabelas and Bass Pro have their own brand.

Get you something you are comfortable with holding all day and something within your budget. I hope this helps. :)

It helps alot!! I wasn't to sure ont the length i dont like to use rods over 7' just cuz im a bit shorter :-? but I know quite a few people that use a 7' + rod and was jst seeing what every body else used and there opinions!!!

I use the 6740X size, because I do a lot of fishing in Erie, but a 6735X or even a 6730X would work. They also sell a 6'8" Shimano Crucial drop shot rod. I like the longer length, because I am taller. My buddy has the 6'8" length and loves it.

I run a Powell 702 ML with a TD SOL 2500. 8 lb Pline Halo.

You want a small diameter light line.  6 or 8 lb. P-Line CX, #6 YoZuri Hybrid Ultra Soft (although it isn't that small in diameter), 6 or 8 lb. Berkley Vanish.

Light line is the key to the drop shot technique.

My drop shot rod is a Kistler 6'9" Mg drop shot rod with a daiwa tierra spinning reel and 6lb. gamma edge flourocarbon.  It is a great setup.  The rod is the perfect length and power to give you a solid hookset on a big smallmouth but not break the line line.  The gamma edge line is by far the strongest and most supple line I have ever used.  Last summer I was swinging 4 1/2 and 5 lb. smallmouths on 6 lb. test with no problem.  This year like a few other fishermen I know, I will be doing some experimenting with some 4lb. test on smallmouths.

you like to use owner hooks? have you had the chance to use the weighted tube hooks they have?

  • Super User

no, I bet I have used tubes for about 6 hours in my life! EVERYTHING else I use is owners though. except in jigs, dartheads, shakeys etc. then I use owners when I can but gammies are fine too.

Gamakatsu octopus hooks #1 on a Yo-zuri Hybrid Ultra Soft 10 lbs. using Cabelas TXS II 6'6" baitcast rod and Daiwa Viento BC reel.   Although I might try the P-line Halo for dropshotting as soon as my order arrives from Cabelas.
