Daiwa Tierra, Exceler, Cabela Tournament ZX

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Three items concerning these three reels:

1.  General thoughts on these reels.

2.  Are there reliability issues with the Cabela reel?

3.  Do I need waterproof drag (Tierra) and corrosion-resistant bearings (Tierra) if I fish exsclsuively in fresh water?

Thanks.

I can only comment on the Tierra. I should preface by sayin that it is fairly new, I haven't fished one, but I have held one in my hand. It is a real smooth piece, nice machined handle, feels solid. I can't comment on the drag, but my partner just bought one so we will hopefully find out this weekend. The Tierra has a 4.7:1 gear ratio, and for me personally, I went with the Shimano Stradic because I wanted something a little faster. Plus the Shimano has been out for years with much success. FWIW the Daiwa is around $114.95 and the Shimano runs about $119.99.

I just recently bought the daiwa exceler 2500 and it is a very nice reel for the price. It also comes with an extra spool.  I got it for 59.99.  Check it out..

+1 on the Exceler.   I've only had mine for a short time but each time I use it I like it more and more.    THe only big difference I can tell between the Tierra and the Exceler is a waterproof drag on the Tierra.     I'll take two Excelers for the price of one Tierra if that is the only difference.

I have two excelers, a couple symetres, and one stradic. For the money, I'd choose the daiwa exceler anyday.

Just got my Tienna.  Appears to be very well made, tolerances are great, very smooth.  I'll be giving a 1 week review when I get back from fork if I catch anything :)
