6.3.1 or 7.1.1 - Gear Swap or just use braid line for Grass.

Featured Replies

Got both Zillion 100 HA and SHA for ripping rattletraps. What do you guys prefer? I’m running 50 lb braid for grass/weeds, but the HA (6.3:1) feels a little slow and am using 12lbs Yo-Zuri hybrid line. Thinking about switching it up line to 50lbs . Also have a Crazy Crank (4.9:1) for chatterbaits to crawl them along the bottom.

Is there anywhere to grab gear sets to bump these up to 7.1:1? Checked TackleTrap but they’re out. Any other sources?

6.3:1 should be fine.  It's a 36mm spool reel.  That brings up the IPT compared to a similar ratio 34 mm or 32 mm reel.  I can keep a buzzbait on top with my 6.5:1 36m spool reels easily.  Are you actually finding the reel too slow or is the ratio getting into your head?  You can aways do an IPT test or do what I do and "can it fish a buzzbait comfortably" test.

I don’t think the difference between 6.3 and 7.1 is enough to justify the expense of a swap. I’ll do whatever a customer wants, but is asked for advice I don’t recommend gear swaps unless the reel is not available in a particular ratio.

I tried it again with braided line (40 lb Sufix 832 Ghost), and it worked much better for me. I was able to maintain control and pull rattletrap out of the grass much more easily. I think I’ll stick with this setup for now.

Taking virtually all the stretch out of the equation is world of difference.  I was going to get rid of a MH MF I had because it felt too soft and slow for pitching and didn't have enough power in the mid-section for chatterbaits.  When I use a reel with braid, it's like a different rod.
