Ceramic Pawl?

Featured Replies

The pawl in my ambassadeur has worn out and started stacking line, i found some on ebay and came across a ceramic pawl?  Has anyone tried them out?  What do you think about them?  I would love to be able to put one in there and have it last more than a year!

The best way to make sure your worm and pawl last longer is to oil more often. And by the way its not your pawl that has gone out it is both your worm and pawl, so you should replace both. When you pull your worm out look at the grove that are on it they all should be pointed, but when the worm goes out one the points will have a notch in it at the end of the point. I have been using a abu garcia torno 3004hsi since 2001 and I only replaced the worm and pawl once.

Juskikn1,

Don't worry, line stacking on a Garcia®, is the result of a dirty line carriage system. Look at the worm gear, if it is full of grease, old oil and dirt, the pawl blade cannot sit fully into the kerfs (cuts) of the worm gear.

Also the pawl gets gummed up in the line carriage and cannot rotate to make the transitions back and forth. This causes a slight hesitation when the carriage hits the end of the worm gear, causing the line to stack on one side or the other.

Every few outings you can use an old tooth brush to clean the garbage out of the worm gear, also remove the pawl and check the blade for gummy build up. Keeping this area clean and lightly oiled (never grease) will do the trick.

As for the ceramic pawls these have come out in the worm gear upgrades, only used in casting competition reels, and on a reel that is exposed to the elements I doubt they would last a year.

In my collection of Garcia® round reels, many from the 80's I have the original pawls still in them. Just have to keep them clean!

A side note, a dirty line carriage system will cut casting distance on the round reels, due to the fact that the line carriage doesn't disengage when casting, it is driven by spool rotation, if you have gummy works in the line carriage it can hamper free spool rotation.

Well i made it to the tackle shop today and went ahead and bought a new worm gear and pawl.  I've kept this reel clean, and I put 1 drop of oil on the worm gear before every fishing trip.  I did order 1 of the ceramic pawls just to try out.  I have 2 newer garcia round reels and have replaced the worm gears and pawls in both of them.  My dad has a few 6500's from the 80's and laughs saying he has never had to replace his!  Thanks guys!
