A few weeks ago, SlotTech (founded by Campbell Coyle) hit the market to solve a common problem: jerkbaits and crankbaits tangling in storage boxes. It’s a smart idea, a strong entrepreneurial story, and clearly a product anglers want — they’ve been selling out quickly.

I genuinely like the product… but for now it works for only about 30–40% of my crankbaits and jerkbaits. With a few adjustments, I believe they could help a lot of jerkbait/crankbait fisherman and also capture significantly more demand.

Pros

• Works very well for certain bait sizes — exactly as advertised.

• Modular design is excellent. You don’t have to dedicate an entire box, which allows mixing cranks and jerks or using slots only where needed.

Opportunity for Improvement

The current sizing doesn’t accommodate smaller or larger baits very well. Jerkbaits under 100 size, for example, don’t stay secure in the slots. That leaves part of the box organized and the rest still prone to tangling — which partially defeats the purpose.

Expanding the line to better cover jerkbaits in the 60–100 range and additional crankbait sizes could push coverage to 80%+ of common bait sizes.

From a business perspective, I understand it’s not practical to solve for every box brand and bait variation. Adding one or two additional box options makes sense — but beyond that, prioritizing expanded bait-size compatibility would likely drive more sales.

For example, even though I own many Plano Edge boxes, I bought Flambeau 3700s specifically to use SlotTech — and my 110 jerkbaits are now perfectly organized. However, my 90–100 sizes still snag, and anything smaller remains in open compartments. I likely won’t purchase a Plano Edge version — but I would absolutely buy more Flambeau SlotTech inserts sized for smaller baits.

Bottom line: better coverage means a better customer experience — and more SlotTech sales.

Best of luck — it’s a strong start and a product worth building on.

I don’t understand why someone hasn’t reproduced the old Falcon fto jerkbait boxes. They were the best and cheapest option. I think Plano bought the patent but they never brought back the jerkbait boxes. The Shimano ones were ok and now Daiwa offers a similar box.

Probably because they were the best and cheapest, and some corporate big wigs said we can't make money like this, and axed it
