Loss of the USS Thresher

Featured Replies

Thank you for posting this. I was thinking about the Thresher and her crew just last week.

I’ve never heard of this, thank you @jbmaine for posting.

My grandfather was in the navy during WW2. He told me once the worst thing he ever heard was “ All hands lost” . It took a while for that to really sink in, tragic.

It seems the Thresher is kind of a local memory. In my case, it's never really out of my thoughts. I grew up ( and still live) local to the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. I was in elementary school when it happened. One of my friends lost his father that day. There is a memorial stone for the Thresher in the middle of the Kittery traffic circle, I see at least once a week . I try to post this every year so maybe more people will hear of it and remember.

Thanks for your reply. I appreciate it.

I remember reading about it in middle school back in the early 70’s. Pretty sure it was in a book. Don’t remember if it was a book about the Thresher, or it was a book about naval tragedies. It’s held my interest ever since.

On of the parts that doesn't get mentioned much is the sub was on trials at the time. Several civilians were onboard as well, from the yard and other companies.
