Spinning rod M/H for frogs

Featured Replies

Please suggest spinning rod M/H for frogs, 1/4- 5/8, fast, $175, 7ft

My present rod weeps on the hook set. Fishing from the bank. Any suggestions appreciated, thanks

While I have done it a long time ago. A MH spinning rod is always gonna be a tad light for frogs. Not only the rod but the way a spinning reel works. A baitcaster is more of a winch. Are you fishing really open water? Or a lot of cover?

Joe is not wrong. If you are truly limited to spinning tackle then go as heavy as you’re comfortable with. A 1/4-3/4 at a minimum. I have a fenwick world class that would pass muster with braid.

If it has to be spinning, look at MH,fast, salt inshore rods in your price range. Will have the fast tip but more backbone than a freshwater rod.

Falcon, Bull Bay, Fittzgerald are all good brands.

When going with spinning rods, you will certainly want to go heavy. While you can get away with frogs on a MH casting rod if you're not throwing them over lily pads, spinning rods almost always run lighter than their casting counterparts.

Were I to try a spinning rod for frogs, I would look for a 7 1/2 foot MH rod and cut it down to 7’ or so to make it more of an extra heavy rod. I would think that a 4000 size reel would be a must to have a drag to handle 50 lb braid. That combo should be able to stick a frog hook.
