Cleaning your spinning reels - Help needed

Featured Replies

Okay, I am dealing with some conflicting advice.  I am cleaning my Shimano spinning reels according to Shimano's website:

So, I am using Abu Garcia Silicote Reel Oil.  However, I also read somewhere to use Lube.  Which do I use?  I am confused now.

One drop of oil on each bearing.  Grease on the gears.

Lard_Bass,

Why aren't you using the Shimano® oil that came with the reel? There are a lot of Lubes out there. Shimano® uses such tight tolerances in their spinning and baitcasting reels, that the only good low viscosity oil/lube for them is the oil that comes with the reel.

To grease the gears you have to break the reel down. Do not try to break down the reel if you have never done it before. There are 2 times the parts in a spinning reel than in a baitcaster. The PDF that you have been reading is the basic's for self service. The reel should be sent to your local service center at least once a year for a proper break down and cleaning of the reel.

Just my .02¢

Reel Mech,

Thanks for the heads up.  I did not receive any oil with my Shimano Reel.  I will try to look for a place to buy them.  I also have a Daiwa spinning reel which does not have any recommendation for maintenance.  I was just  going to copy Shimano's method onto the Daiwa.

I will definitely send the reels in for a pro to tune up.  Thanks again.

It will be the same, that PDF is the basics for DIY service for all spinning gear.

Always a good idea!

hot sauce is the worst thing you can put in a reel

Why is that? Quantum swears by it.

But with a side of ranch, it won't be so bad  ;D

Seriously, what is the basis for your opinion.  I read in several places favorable reviews about Quantum Hot Sauce Reel Oil.

Still waiting for your answer on what facts you base your opinion on.

I have had two people tell me they use spay silicone on their reels , I have my nice reels serviced but I have a few beater catfish and crappie reels I wont spend the money on. Will this just gum them up or what? It sounds like it would cause more problems than help.
