5'6" med action rod with a zebco 33.  Should be real easy to learn on.  Can probably buy the combo for less than $20.00 if you shop around. :o

Ugly Sticks are GREAT for kids. I had one from 8-16, in fact I had 3 over that time span, and only because I left them places when I went on vacation and lost them... Never broke, always treated me well, and they can hold some pretty nice sized fish. As for real, I'm not good with that so I can't say. But Ugly Sticks are great for kids!

I started witha Zebco 33 and this is what my 7yr old landed his first bass on.

http://www.zebco.com/catalog/33.html

It prices for $20 to $30, ball bearing drive -not nylon gear like 202, rod kinda feels like a bass rod, 10lb test, can throw fairly light jigs to heavier bass lures really nice, plus it has enough backbone to land a nice Bass or Catfish. I think I payed a little over $20 at Walmart.

They are right about the Ugly Stick, very durable rod. put 33 on it and it will last, great for kids.

Any rod in the 5 to 6' range is good.

I would also have to say it probably isn't too early to get him started with a decent spinning or baitcast set up.

I got my daughter a nice, cheap 6' Daiwa casting rod for $12 at Sportsman's Warehouse and another low end 5'6" South Bend casting rod that she could use with any of my baitcast reels.

I also got her a Shakespeare 5'6" spinning rod and Daiwa 1500 size spinning reel ($9.99)

She started with a Barbie (which she still uses on occassion) pole at 3, learned how to use a spinning reel at 5 and a baitcast reel at 6. Granted, she gets the occassional tangle (don't we all? ;D) but it is amazing at how fast kids can learn, especially with encouragement.

One of her rods with my 301A Cardiff

Here she is jigging with a right-handed Abu Garcia round reel and an 8'6" heavy action steelhead/salmon rod.  Homemade leash designed to prevent accidental dropping of rig into the drink.

The first words out of her mouth after the first cast she made with my 201 Curado BSF were, Papi! I like this reel. It is so much easier to use than the other one (the spinning reel) and it is more fun to use too. Easier? More fun? Now all I can say to that is this; That's my little girl!  :o

Beautiful daughter, ib. Looks like she loves her dad.

id say maybe sumtin light action.from my experiances as a kid i never cuaght fiah the size that the older ppl were catchin so a light action would give those lil fish some more fight

Marlboroman-  I have a few rods leftover from last years CAST For Kids event here in Providence.  If you'd like to pay shipping, I'll gladly send you one for your son.  These are fantastic set-ups, I was extremely impressed at what zebco gives these kids for gear.  Like I said, all yours if you'd like.

They are 6' med cork grips with an all metal "33"

ISLAND-simply adorable, what a sweet lookin' kid.  Her dad seems to enjoy making her smile too,...good stuff man!

Thanks for the info guys... and LBH thank you...

I got permission to fish a nice private 6 acre lake with large carppie and bass in it.

This lake has been under strict management for 10 years and I have been told several lunkers are waiting for him to pull them out :o

Thanks again guys
