Keel Guard Sealant

Featured Replies

For anyone who installed their own keel guard did you use 3M 4200 or 5200 marine sealant on the edge of the guard?

Just a general comment about the sealants you mentioned. 3M 5200 is a permanent sealant and should only be used if you never intend to take apart or replace the item you're sealing.

3M 4200 provides a completely water tight bond, but is not quite as strong as 5200. It can be removed by conventional methods like heat, scrapers, and other mechical means.

I installed hundreds of KeelShield keel protectors, usually at dealer lots. As a rule I didn’t use sealer, it wasn’t necessary with the 3M bonding on a KeelShield but it is an option.

Choosing the Right Sealant:

3M 5200: This is a very strong, permanent glue and sealant. Use this if you want the guard to stay on for good.

3M 4200: This is a fast-curing, semi-permanent marine adhesive. It is slightly easier to remove later if you ever need to replace the guard.

Marine Goop / Aquaseal: A flexible, waterproof glue that many users on Reddit suggest for smaller boats or kayak keel guards.
