Need Help Picking a Rod Size

Featured Replies

So I have pretty much decided to buy a BPS Johnny Morris combo...7.1:1 SHA reel. However, I am at a loss for what rod to go with. I pretty much do mostly bass fishing but also some Pike. I will probably only use this combo for crankbaits, topwater(propbaits, buzzbaits, etc.), and swimbaits. I have it down to either 6'6" MH or a 7' M. Please give any input that you have. All opinions and replies will be greatly appreciated. Thank You in advance.

6'6" MH, too many baits listed are too heavy for a M action rod.

I too agree, but if you fish cranks I would go 7'M but if you are going to fish of them on one rod I would go 7' MH.

I have one of the Johnny Morris rods; a 7' MH, and I like it a lot, but I think it would not make a very good rod for cranks, or any other reaction type baits. It's a darned good worm/jig rod though. I'd call it a very fast action rod. That's what you want for plastics fishing. You want a slower, more moderate action rod for reaction baits. It's a matter of having a rod with some give to keep from pulling the baits away from the fish. The slower action will let the fish get the bait in it's mouth. I think all of the Johnny Morris rods are fast action. With that in mind, and having used one myself, I'd go with the 7' Medium, if your heart is set on the combo. I think it's a good choice. I have two of the reels also. Very nice.

Cheers,

GK

Just a opinion here. I think a 6'6" MH is a good all around rod. You can pitch, flip, worm and crankbait with it. I feel it would be your best " fish all " rod.

If you are going to pitch and flip a 7' MH would be better. You want a long rod to pitch and flip!  ;)
