Using superline w/mono leader...which knot to use?

Featured Replies

I've been doing this an using a blood knot.  Today I tried a Uni-Uni knot and that one is pretty tough for me.  Is the blood knot the best knot to use in this situation?  Trilene XT 14lb. has been my leader of choice on 20lb. Fireline.  It seems to work pretty well, I was just looking for a really strong, easy knot.

I've been using opposing nail knots for the last few months and have been VERY pleased with that knot. I haven't had a single failure. Its definetely a tough one to tie, probably took me a couple weeks to get to where I could consistantly tie it without problems but it was worth learning.

I don't think I've had the blood knot fail.  What are the advantages of the nail knot, Supermat?

I actually learned about it on here. From what I understand its the strongest of the connection knots. The drawbacks are that its pretty bulky and its definetely not easy to tie.

Thanks. I may give it a try, but usually bulky = bad in my opinion. I had a horrendous lash a couple weeks ago because my connecting knot snagged in an eyelet.

I think bulky was the wrong choice of words... its long and thin. As for the catching, I've never had that happen going out but it can happen while reeling back in. Sorry to hear you wrecked a spool of braid, that's a bummer!

I continue to experiment with leader connections to braid.

Currently I'm using a modified albright knot.  It doubles the wrap but is still low profile.

braid is tough line to work with for leaders.  Slippery stuff.

Opposing nails knots. Especially when two lines are different diameter. They are easy to tie with a "Knottyer" tool. If tied properly, it has a small profile and will travel smoothly through the guides. I have broken the line on both sides of this knot and have never seen it fail. JMHE

Modified albright is the way to go...Add a little super glue if you aint so sure. Also if using a smaller braid or the knot keeps failing upon testing it...Double up the  braided line and tie the albright, it will not fail....Tried to make it fail in salt and freshwater and it wouldnt....catfish,snook,bass,stripers,hybrid bass couldnt make it fail.....

Most times I also only use a leader that is 4-6" shorter than the length of my rod at the longest, That way there is no reason for the knot to enter my guides. I usually use about a 3 or 4ft leader w/ a blood knot and havent had any trouble either, dont feel like its costing my bites either.
