How do you put line into a spinning real?....

Featured Replies

I use Stren and it comes with an opening in the side that you thread the line thru. Have never had kinks doing it this way. Have read on here some folks lay the line on the floor and take some turns on the reel. Drop the rod tip toward the line and if you get twists, turn the line over. Hope I've got that right, like I said I've always used Stren...

Spinning reels turn clockwise so to avoid twisting you want the line to come off the spool counter clockwise. For the most part the side of the spool with the label on it needs to be facing up if you are going to have the spool laying flat. Just check to see which way the line is coming off.

I like skillet take mine off the top right out of the box.  I stick my line out the flap, close the flap and use the friction of the spool turning inside the box to keep the line tight.  The main culprit in line twist is the reel itself and the quality of its roller bearing.

I agree with G3 to have the line come off the supply spool counterclockwise, but pay no attention to the label position, it is meaningless.

I also agree with Jig man; almost all of my twist problems over the course of many years have been the result of reels which could not handle line without inducing twist.

Any spinning reel will twist line.  Of course some are worse offenders than others, but you have the line coming straight down the rod shaft and the reel "twists" it sideways to spool it.  That's why manually flipping the bail is an important twist reduction technique.

Letting the line out behind the boat with no terminal tackle on it is a good practice to eliminate line twist.

Braided line, due to it's limpness is excellent at resisting twist.
