NEED ROD HELP!!!!!

Featured Replies

Ok....after the Kistler post heres the deal. I have two custom G Lommis rods maybe? Bought them a coulpe of years ago from a guy hows son turned pro had them custom built. I now fish with ok don't laugh Quest for Dick's. I fish with Jimmy Wailey from Ga. all the you Ga. boys that fish tournaments will know who he is. Well that is what he swears by and he has a garage full of Lommis ,Castaway ,Allstar I'm taking a challenge.....Here it goes . I will buy any rod after I get response. now here's the deal don't just pick the most expensive one ....tell me why you choose it , where to buy it, and here's what I want it for. Worm an Jig fishing. I use 7 ft MH with a Curado cu200 reel. I will purchase the rod with the best responce and give and honest feed back. Now all you have to do is compete with a$30 Dick's brand rod thats easy enough.

i went custom for my jig and worm rod ..... dgrod works ..... reel mech made my rod and did one out standing job .... ohh this rod has the feel ;D

Lets see if I understand this right. Your challenge is between a Quest and a custom 7' MHF.

Or between a Quest and Loomis, Castaway, and AllStar.

If your challenge is between the Quest and a custom build your looking at better than $30.00 for the rod.

If your challenge is between a Quest and a Loomis, Castaway, or AllStar. You would be hard pressed to find any of those brands in the $30.00 range for the length and power your looking at.

You could use the rods your fishing buddy has and do a comparison for free.

If I am misunderstanding your challenge then please try to enlighten us on this...

My personal t-rig rod is a custom build on a St.Croix 7' MHF SC3 Avid blank, with Alconite guides that are spiral wrapped, split grips, exposed fuji trigger reel seat, with no fore grip. It is light and well balanced to my Curado 201B.

My challenge is I will buy any rod that is recomeded but I need to why you like the rod you use.We have Kistler guys on here we have St.Croix guys, and Lommis to name three. I will pick the best post and purchase that rod next week. I fish with Quest right now a $30 Dick's brand I fish no less that 2 hours everyday....and catch an average of 7 per day so I will be able to give an unbias opinion. I will keep everyone up to date on how the challenge is going. Just want the facts this is not a debate.

After our phone conversation I thought I would reiterate my feelings on this subject here.

The G Loomis rods, Kistler rods etc.. are fantastic rods.  However, if you are rough on your rods, they may or may not be the best for you.  Those rods are fantastic for feel and sensitivity, but you give up (what I call flexibility in a rod)  in other words they dont take the abuse that I deal out to a rod very well.

They seem to be more brittle, so if you go to set the hook on what you think is a monster, and it turns out to be a stump and there is no give, you are more likely to break off the tip in my opinion.  I know one guy that broke off 6 in. of a G Loomis rod when a hybrid hit his lure like a frieght train.

Sure it was replaced under warranty,, however, he had to drive 2 hrs. ea. way to get it replaced, and lost a day fishing because of the drive.  I love the BPS rods.  For the money (and they are all on sale right now for Father's Day) you can not beat them.  I own a Tx Special, a Bionic Blade and a BPS Extreme.   My Extreme is a spinning rod, and I use it almost exclusively for my plastics fishing.  It is a 7ft. MH, and I can feel every thing my lure touches thru the rod.   I also use a flourocarbon line, for more sensitivity as well (by the way, thanks again RW for the info on Ultra Soft Line I love it).

Hooksets are fantastic as well.  Most of the time, the fish hooks themselves, all i have to do is fight them to the boat.  I have yet to lose a fish on that paticular rod once they are hooked up.

The BPS Extreme is a 60 mil modulus rod,  which to me is the break even point on a rod.(greatest sensitivity without giving up flexibility)    Which even the rod and reel guys at BPS told me they get fewer returns on broken rods with this one than any of the  other higher content rods and higher priced ones they sell.

For the 69.00 price right now on sale, I do not think there is a better rod out there period.

Just my humble opinion.  Good luck, and I am looking forward to hitting Varner with you in a couple three weeks.

John

That is a great suggestion I own a BPS Extreme and it is a fine rod By the Way Fathers Day Price at BPS is 65 bucks I would jump all over that  :)

Why not have a custom rod built for you?

Using a custom built for someone else, IMHO defeats the purpose.

Thanks to you and John both but this is more to put this really high end rod stuff that everyone gets so heated about out of my head once and for all. As I mentioned in the first post Jimmy Whaley is one of the best tournament fisherman in Ga. and he says his Quest is better than Lommis , Allstar and the rest. I just want to compare for myself. I don't mind spending the money to really see if there is something I'm missing. It's kinda like the whole Senko thing I was sold on Yamamoto, but Russ turned me on to ***, I've been testing for more than a month to find out for myself. I have Allstar old and new and two custom Lommis i bought for a guy that fished tounament but thet must be lower end blanks they feel heavy and not that sensative.

Slayer,

I knew I didn't have a good grasp of what your challenge was...

If you catch fish with your Quest, and it feels the way that enables you to catch fish, then stick with Quest rods. I would say the same with any brand, and they wouldn't have to be high end.

Just because I build my own rods doesn't mean that you should run right out and by custom rods. It has taken me years of on the water testing, and thousands of dollars to get the feel that I like in my personal rods.

Did you know that only 2% of the angling population actually purchase, and use custom built rods. Did you also know that it's not much more than that in the angling population that can afford, and, actually do use the so called "High end rods". So don't go running out, and throw down 250 - 500 bones on a rod, thinking it will ease the confusion you have in your head about high end rods, and the way you have been told they feel, believe me it won't. How a rod feels to one angler will not necessarily feel the same to you.

Hope this makes sense to you...

Just my .02¢
