I picked a 10 dollar rod at a yard sale today.  It is a 6'6"MH Pinnacle Millenia

baitcasting rod with a moderate to fast action. I have never heard of it before. It is rated for 10 -17 lb line and 3/16- 1oz lure.  It is in excellent shape and I was thinking of having it as an extra when I take a friend fishing. I am looking for a low budget reel to put on it say from wally world. Does anyone have a good suggestions. While my intentions for it is a multi-purpose rod what would be the best use for this rod? Topwater, spinnerbait, etc?

While i'm not familiar with what Wally World has in their cabinets anymore, I would recommend you take the rod with you to your local store and try the reel/s your interested in on the rod for fit and feel.

If the rod is in fact a Medium Heavy power with a Moderate tip action it would probably make a good spinnerbait, topwater, or small crankbait rod.

the walmart here sells pinnacle reels for about 50 bucks..as well as some abu's, shimano, and diawa...if you look in the glass case at the sporting goods counter that is where they keep the higher end reels

The rod, manufactured by Silstar, is a $40.00 Graphite. It should be good as an all around rod and should perform just fine for many different applications. Take the rod to a local and check the reel seat for fit with different reels. (already suggested)

If you are wanting to let friends use this combo I would not buy a baitcaster! Baitcaster plus friend = backlash. I have found that anyone that can throw a baitcaster has there own. I would think about a Zebco 33.

For those who are avid fisherfolks and show up without equipment I let them use either some of my baitcasting or spinning gear, their choice. Those who are not fisherfolks get a baitcasting rod with a spincast reel.

I think the best reel for that rod would be a new Steez.   ;D
