Fluorocarbon Showdown Sequel (New TT Test Results)

I fish in water that often has visibility of over 20 feet so visibility is a definite factor for me. While fishing for fish that tend to be less line shy, using techniques where line visibility are a little less of a factor, or like when I was fishing deep saltwater I often used braid with either a top shot of mono or a leader of fluorocarbon. In fact I even have caught quite a few sharks using braid as leader. Sure I would get cut of some but not as often as you might think. I found the small diameter more often fit between their teeth and once I brought the shark to the boat by simply changing the line angle several times while working the rod tip up and down it made for a quick release. A charter captain friend was so amazed by the technique he even started using it on his boat.

Fluorocarbon definitely has its place but just as most things that come out they are often over hyped. That is why listen and reading others field experience pays such dividends.

I fish clear water with zero vegetation and the only variation is the size of the rock from very small to huge. Therefore, my requirements are completely different from some others here. Of course knot strength is always important. Does anyone remember the oval line that was out years ago? I do not recall now who made it but I seem to remember one being called 14/40 saying it was the size of 14lb. line but with the breaking strength of 40lb. line. Well I only had it on one rod and reel but I lost more fish on that stuff than all the rest of my rods and reels put together. I swear it must have been a fish conspiracy because the fish loved to torment me by hitting that rigged rod and reel only to have knot fail. I do believe I heard the fish laughing at me!  The same knots that did not fail on the round mono mind you. Boy, I could not get rid of that stuff fast enough.

We all like to try new things and sometimes they turn out to be great new inventions. Sometimes, however, they turn out to be better at catching fishermen than fish. Hey, it is all fun, and you live and learn then hopefully pass on what you learn so the next guy can learn from your mistakes.

New fishermen now days have advantages like bassresource.com and TT to educate them on technique and tackle that shaves untold years of the learning curve. So while tests are great, fellow forum members keep sharing your knowledge as there is no substitute for hands on experience to validate those test results.

In case you want my opinion which doesn't count for much what I do is put Yozuri-ultra soft 6 or 4lb on one spool then Power Pro on the other. I'm not sure about bait casters but most spinning reels come with a spare spool. I know you didn't ask about braids but you shouldn't count them out. I love my Power pro but am equally as happy with the Yozuri.
